Officer Bobby Combs of the Soddy Daisy Police Department was honored by the city with a special presentation of the Lifesaver Award at the Thursday night commission meeting. On Oct. 10, he responded to a call at a residence and found a woman bleeding and fumbling with a revolver, attempting to cock the hammer. Officer Combs tackled her and knocked the gun out of her hands and was able to gain control of the situation. His training and quick action saved the victim’s life, said Sergeant Jerry Workman, who presented the award.

Officer Combs received praise, thanks and congratulations from each of the commissioners.

A second presentation was made to the commissioners by CPA Brian Wright, with Johnson, Murphey & Wright, P.C. The annual audit report showed a clean opinion, which is the best you can get, he said. He thanked the staff for a very good job of record keeping. And, the city still has no debt, said City Manager Janice Cagle.

Ms. Cagle received permission to purchase equipment and two vehicles. All of the purchases were budgeted items, she said.

A snowplow was approved for the public works department for the cost of $5,500. The public works department will try to install it. However, if they are unable to, the city will need to pay to have it done, which will add another $2,500 to the price. A total of up to $8,000 was authorized for the snowplow.

The Police Department will be getting a Ford Explorer, and it will be bought with the state contract price of $31,294. Radios, decals and other equipment will have to be added. This vehicle will replace one with high mileage.

A Ford F250 will be bought for the fire department. The amount of up to $30,500 was approved for this truck.

The city’s annual celebration, Christmas in the Park, will be held at Poe’s Tavern on Saturday, Dec.1, from 3:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

With Mayor Robert Cothran’s term coming to a close, he said that serving in this position had been a good experience, and he thanked the city’s office staff and recorder Burt Johnson who had all helped him considerably.

Erlanger Primary Care opened at 9448 Dayton Pike at the end of August. Commissioner Gene Shipley said that the city needs the doctor’s offices, and the office needs to be utilized. He urged Soddy Daisy residents to support the facility. Ms. Cagle said that currently there are two doctors. As the business grows, they hope to have specialists that will rotate through the office. The family practice can treat infants to adults and is scheduled by appointment. The services offered at the facility range from acute care, wellness and physical exams to minor office-based procedures.

The next scheduled meeting of the Soddy Daisy Commission is Dec. 6, which will be the last for the year. The commissioners agreed to cancel the meetings for Dec. 20 and Jan. 3 because of conflicts with the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
