Christmas for the Homeless, an initiative to provide Christmas joy for those less fortunate, was launched by Shana Hilson, a nurse practitioner at Vascular Institute of Chattanooga, over a decade ago. What started as an opportunity for Ms. Hilson to teach her daughter about the homeless population turned into a program that provides backpacks full of items to 1,800 people through the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
“It keeps getting bigger each year,” Ms.
Hilson said. “The generosity of this community is overwhelming. We are helping ensure our local neighbors have a Christmas worth celebrating.”
Ms. Hilson now has a team of volunteers to help coordinate the project. Local businesses and citizens are invited to drop off new backpacks, personal hygiene items, blankets and warm clothing throughout the month of November at VIC, at 2358 Lifestyle Way, Ste. 100. All donations will be used in the Christmas for the Homeless initiative, in partnership with the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
Ms. Hilson has learned about the causes of homelessness, “it’s not because they want to be there or choose it, abuse, job loss, and the lack of affordable housing all contribute to this problem.” Ms. HIlson’s hope is that the backpacks give people a sense of dignity and warmth that they deserve during the Christmas season.
