Covenant Women Fall In USA South Semifinals

  • Friday, November 2, 2018
The Covenant women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to No. 1 West seed Maryville in a USA South Tournament semifinal on the campus of Greensboro College on Friday.

The No. 3 West seed Covenant ends the year with an 11-8-1 overall record. Maryville (13-5) moves on to face No. 2 West seed Piedmont in the USA South Tournament championship match on Saturday.

Maryville scored the lone tally of the match in the eighth minute. Bailey Sipos won the ball on the Maryville attacking half and slotted a pass to Lexi Hill where Hill put a shot past Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay for the score.

Maryville looked poised to break the match open over the next several minutes as the Scots took six shots in the first 15 minutes of the contest.
However, Lemay and the Covenant defense withstood the flurry of chances to keep the match tight.

With rain falling harder as the match wore on, Covenant started to get a few opportunities on its offensive end. Kailey Burrell had a look in the 66th minute that was saved by Maryville keeper Abbey Coleman. In the 79th minute, Paige Simons found some space, but her attempt from distance went wide of the target. Katie LaPenna also had a near miss in the 87th minute when her shot from beyond the box just went over the crossbar.

For the match, Covenant outshot Maryville 9-8 as Burrell, Simons, and LaPenna had two shots apiece.

Lemay made three saves in her final collegiate match. The senior ends her career with 303 saves in 70 career matches.

Coleman also made three saves at the net for Maryville to pick up the shutout.

Covenant ends the year with a winning record for the 21st time in program history. The 11 wins also marked the 19th time the Lady Scots have won double-digit matches in the program's 25-year history.
