Margaret Cassity Culberson, 92, of Dalton passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Culberson, Jr.

With a wide variety of interests, Margaret devoted her active life to the Dalton community and beyond. As a young adult she was very involved in local fundraising events, taught folk dancing at the elementary schools, was an active alto in the Daltones Choir and was a popular Girl Scout leader who founded and managed Camp Maynard, a summer day camp for  Girl Scouts of all ages. Hundreds of women recall her creative camp themes and fun activities!

Margaret, artist and potter, managed the Fine Arts Exhibit at the North Georgia Fair for many years. She achieved the grade of brown belt in Tae Kwon-Do, captured the leading role of Mame in the Dalton Little Theater’s production, and was crowned the 1996 Ms Georgia Senior. She remained active with the Georgia Senior pageant association and it’s Georgia Classic Club for many years, singing and dancing with her Classic Club sisters at nursing homes, hospitals, senior centers and anywhere there was a stage. With many accolades and awards  for her art, pottery, community involvement, dancing and acting, Margaret was also honored to be a special initiate of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for Women.

During these many activities, Margaret raised three daughters and was very active in their school activities, particularly the Dalton High School Marching Band. She assisted husband and square dance caller Bob with square dance classes; and worked for more than 30 years at the Whitfield County Tax/Tag office, where she was often seen lifting the spirit of those in long tag lines by leading them in song....”You Are My Sunshine” being a crowd favorite.

Active in the Whitfield County Senior Center in later years, Margaret is one of the founders of the Marsell Tap Dancers whose performances continue to be enjoyed throughout the Northwest Georgia area.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Pamela Houser of Atlanta, daughter and son-in-law Gloria and Larry Hice of Huntsville, Al. and daughter Melanie Cassity of Athens, Ga.; grandchildren, Casey, Maggie, Dalyn, and Matthew; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Dalton Little Theater, 210 N Pentz St, Dalton, GA 30720, where Margaret will make her final on-stage appearance. Friends are invited to share in this celebration and encouraged to dress in Margaret appropriate attire: colorful, bedazzled, and bejeweled.
