Frances Byrom, age 76, of Dalton, passed away, Monday, November 19, 2018 at Tranquility Assisted Living.

Frances was born in Walker County, Georgia, Fran was the first child of Virgil and Dorothy Cook. 

She is predeceased in death by her parents, husband Alva Byrom of Alpharetta, and dear cousin Nancy Gruman. 

She is survived by her sister, Linda Woods of Cohutta, brothers Virgil (Donna) Cook and Randy (Ann) Cook of Dalton; sisters-in-law Maryanna Byrom Hunter of Monticello, Ga., and Sandi Mitchell Byrom of San Antonio, Tx. Surviving her are also many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She attended Whitfield County public schools and graduated from Reinhardt College and GA State University, all with academic honors.  She was a mentor and enthusiastic supporter of higher education for many youngsters in her family as well as for GA State U’s annual scholarship drives.  After teaching high school business education in the Atlanta area for several years, she obtained a Certified Financial Planner designation and Series 6 Stockbroker’s License and worked in the financial services industry for a number of years. At age 40, she became a member of ALTA & USTA women’s tennis leagues and played year –round for more than 25 years out of DeKalb and Blackburn tennis centers, often serving as captain.  She enjoyed travel both internationally and within the U.S. especially to major tennis tournaments and to national parks.  She worked with the neighborhood civic associations both in Stone Mountain and Alpharetta.  For more than a decade she delivered Meals on Wheels in Dekalb County. For many years Fran was a member of Tucker First United Methodist Church active in Sunday School, the Board of Stewards, and Co-chair of the Worship Committee, and more recently a member of Alpharetta United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 26, at 3 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
