CBA Members Provide Wills For Veterans Pro Bono

  • Tuesday, November 6, 2018

Members of the Chattanooga Bar Association will meet Monday with indigent and low-income veterans to provide advanced directives for healthcare and very simple wills.  This first annual event will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Courts Building on Market Street.

The CBA has the support of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Chief John Ross Chapter; the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council; the Southeast Tennessee Veterans Coalition; and the Vascular Institute of Chattanooga.

In addition to the pro bono services of the attorneys, the Vascular Institute will provide to the first 100 veterans who attend a free carotid ultrasound test.  This test will be by appointment at their convenience.

There are nearly 23,000 veterans in the greater Chattanooga.  “These organizations wanted to launch an initiative where volunteer attorneys donate their time and expertise in providing advanced directives for healthcare and very simple wills to our indigent and low-income veterans," said Lynda Hood, executive director of the Chattanooga Bar Association. "Our veterans are selfless individuals who think of others first and put the good of the country before themselves. They selflessly devoted their lives to serving our country, prepared to pay the ultimate price in the line of duty. We want to give back - serving those who served us."

“This clinic will serve to eliminate many unnecessary problems and help to get their affairs in order and prepare for the future,” said Judge Alex McVeagh.

“Each of them stood on the line for us, and we should take that seriously," said Linda Mines, historian for the Tennessee Society DAR, local city and county historian. "We understand the cost of freedom, and this is just one way we can say thank you."
