Per Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) regulations, Walker County Water & Sewerage Authority (WCWSA) is providing notice of a third sewer water spill connected to a grease blockage discovered in the sewer system last month.

This latest discharge was estimated to be about 40,000 gallons. The spill occurred intermittently from Nov. 4-7 in a remote wooded area between Glass Mill Road and Lee Clarkson Road, near Chickamauga. This is the same location as the first two spills and some of the remnants entered the waters of Crawfish Creek, which is a tributary of West Chickamauga Creek.

A year-long stream monitoring program was implemented near the location of the spill following the first occurrence. In addition, the affected area remains roped off, with signs posted and lime spread. WCWSA crews and independent contractors with sewer cleaning vacuum trucks continue to work in this area to remove grease from the sewer system. Over the past two weeks, crews have removed more than a ton of grease from the system.
