Dr. George Newton Fincher was carried home by God after a courageous, strong and inspiring battle with cancer.  He was at home surrounded by God, family, and the caring folks of Hearth Hospice.

He was an amazing, loving, devoted husband, father, and a dearly beloved GG and Geege.

Dr. Fincher loved his country fiercely and proudly served in the United States Air Force. He was a Viet Nam veteran and a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.  He loved traveling and enjoyed many vacations with his beloved grandchildren.

Dr. George N. Fincher was a resident of Ooltewah, and was a Tennessee Licensed Senior Psychological Examiner/HSP, Licensed Professional Counselor/MHSP, and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. He obtained his Doctorate of Education in counseling psychology from the University of Sarasota. In his private practice, Dr. Fincher had over 40 years of practical, professional work experience from the fields of education, mental health, corrections and business.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 31 years, Carol Gentry Fincher; children, Kristen D. Sheppard, Brad (Ashley) Davis, George Fincher II, and “chosen” son, Kevin Sheppard; grandsons, Justice Sheppard, Braxton Davis, and Aaron Strutton; great-grandson, Bentley Sheppard; and grand-princesses, Averie Sheppard, Willow-Kate Davis, and Maddie-Grace Davis; siblings, Larry (Marian) Fincher, Phoebe Fincher (Jim) McDaniel, and Polly Fincher (Allan) Totton; and many other dear family members, travel companions, and friends.

Dr. Fincher was the son of the late Lois Smith Fincher and Arvel Luther Fincher.

Words cannot express how much we love and miss him! He will forever be alive in our hearts.

We would like to extend our heart-felt gratitude to Dr. D. Keith Helton and the team of Hearth Hospice, especially Tiffany and Leona for all their care and support.

The family will receive friends at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13.

A memorial celebration will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14. Final resting will be in the National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Welcome Home of Chattanooga (Hospice for the Homeless care) would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements are under the care of Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist East Chapel, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge, Tn. 37412.
