Settlement Reached In Lawsuits Against County Schools In Ooltewah Rape Case

  • Monday, December 3, 2018

Settlements have been reached in two lawsuits against the Hamilton County Department of Education brought in connection with the rape of several Ooltewah High School freshmen basketball players.

The cases had been set to go to trial on Dec. 11 before Judge Sandy Mattice.

Terms of the settlements were not immediately available.

Federal lawsuits had been brought by the family of one of the boys who was seriously injured when a pool cue was inserted into his rectum by older players at a cabin in Gatlinburg.

A second player who was injured also sued.

Judge Mattice recently put down a 62 page order in the case.  He dismissed individual defendants, but left some of the accusations against the county schools for the jury to consider.

The lawsuits said the county schools did not property train employees concerning prevention of sexual harassment.
