Girls Inc. of Chattanooga will announce the honorees that will be recognized at the 15th Annual UnBought and UnBossed Awards Luncheon. The announcement will be made at a reception on Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. at the EPB Community Room, and the luncheon is scheduled for April 3, 2019 at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center.
Named for the phrase coined by former U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm, the UnBought and UnBossed Awards honor women in the Hamilton County area who, through their career achievements and community involvement, have made a significant impact on the lives of women and girls. The inspiration for the event, Shirley Chisholm, broke through societal barriers and opened doors for other women as the first black woman elected to Congress and the first woman ever to run for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Over 150 women have been honored at the UnBought and UnBossed Awards throughout the past 14 years. This event is unique in that the honorees are chosen by Girls Inc. high school girls. The girls are educated about the strong, smart and bold women who have impacted the nation, including women in the community. Girls are provided the foundational information about Shirley Chisholm, women’s history, and the traits of leaders in preparation for selecting their UnBought and UnBossed honorees. Nominations for women in diverse career fields are submitted by community members. Personal and identifying information is removed, so the girls choose their honorees based solely on merit.
