Governor-Elect Bill Lee Announces Additions To Governor’s Staff

Friday, December 7, 2018

Tennessee Governor-elect Bill Lee announced four additions to his staff in the Office of the Governor, all of whom will have responsibilities connected to Legislative Affairs.

“Working with the legislature is one of the most important jobs a governor has,” said Governor-Elect Lee.

“These four talented and qualified individuals will do a tremendous job representing my administration and the State of Tennessee at the Tennessee General Assembly. I am grateful they are joining our team.”

The governor-elect named the following to his staff:

·      Chris Devaney – Special Assistant to the Governor

·      Brent Easley – Legislative Director

·      Liz Alvey – Legislative Counsel

·      Brittany Collins - Senior Legislative Liaison

Mr. Devaney, from Chattanooga, will serve as the Special Assistant to the Governor, a cabinet-level position with a broad portfolio, including legislative affairs. Currently, he is the deputy director and legislative liaison for Governor-elect Lee’s transition. He previously served as campaign manager for Bill Lee’s gubernatorial campaign. Prior to managing the campaign, he served as executive director of CNP Haiti, a Christian mission organization working to prevent childhood malnutrition. He was also chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party from 2009 – 2015 and was a senior aide to Senator Bob Corker and former Senator Fred Thompson.

Mr. Easley will lead the Legislative Affairs office in the Office of the Governor. He currently serves as the state director for TennesseeCAN, an education advocacy group. Previously, he served as the state director for StudentsFirst Tennessee. Prior to that, he worked in the Tennessee House of Representatives as the senior research and policy analyst for the Tennessee House Republican Caucus.

Attorney Liz Alvey will serve as legislative counsel. She has worked with the Tennessee State Senate since 1999, having served as the senior policy advisor to Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris since 2007. Over the past eight years, Ms. Alvey chaired the State Transformation in Action Recognition (STAR) of the Southern Legislative Conference. She also served on the Shared State Legislation Committee on the Council of State Governments from 2010 to 2018.

Ms. Collins currently serves as legislative liaison to Governor Bill Haslam, and she will continue in the Lee administration as a senior legislative liaison. Prior to joining the Haslam administration, she served as regional political director for the Tennessee Republican Party, helping the party elect a record number of Republicans in 2014. She has worked extensively with military families and service members.

On Nov. 7, the transition unveiled a new website - transition.billlee.com. The site includes detailed information about the Governor-elect’s policy priorities, a section where Tennesseans can submit their resumes to potentially join his team, and most importantly, a section where Tennesseans can share their ideas with the governor-elect and his team.

Thank You, Commissioners

I want to thank the five county commissioners who voted down the ridiculous property tax increase. Your votes reflected the wishes of the electorate – and that is exactly as it should be. The voting citizen is inundated by “promises” during pre-election campaigns. By casting our vote we select the candidate that will (we hope) best represent our best interests. Yes, there are always ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Hall Is (Still) Tired

About 10 years ago, Robert A. Hall, a five-time member of the Massachusetts State Legislature, wrote an essay on “Why I Am Tired.” In 2009 his story was on hundreds of others’ blogs – really made the rounds on the Internet – and thousands adored the Viet Nam veteran's candid assessment of what makes an ex-Marine grow weary. Again, this was written when he was 63. Now he’s ... (click for more)

John Hunt: It's Always Tough Saying Farewell To A Pet

There comes a time in every pet owner’s life when difficult decisions have to be made. Althea and I experienced one of those Monday morning when we decided to send our cat CJ to the rainbow bridge. It was a painful decision, but it was the right one to make. We had gotten CJ when he was just a tiny kitten in October ’97. We figured he was about six weeks old, so we picked ... (click for more)
