Covenant Men Fall In USA South Tournament Semifinals

Saturday, April 14, 2018 - by Andrew Mindeman
In a battle of regionally ranked teams with a berth in the USA South Tournament championship on the line, the Covenant men's tennis team narrowly fell to Methodist by a 5-4 final on Saturday afternoon at LaGrange College in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Covenant, ranked 17th in the ITA Atlantic South region poll, finishes the year 15-5 overall.
Methodist (15-7), ranked No. 16 in the region, moves on to face N.C. Wesleyan
on Sunday for the tournament title.

Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox finished strong with wins in both doubles and singles play. As a tandem at No. 1 doubles, Harvie and Cox won for a 17th straight time with their 8-2 win over Methodist's Jacob Oehser and Reid Rose.

However, Methodist would take doubles wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to grab a 2-1 match lead.

Harvie won a battle of regionally ranked individuals at the No. 1 singles spot against Methodist's RJ Clement. Ranked No. 19 in the region, Harvie took down Clement 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot. Clement was the last player to beat Harvie in USA South play back in 2016, but Harvie got the final meeting between the two in their collegiate careers.

Cox also collected two wins on the day as he was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at the No. 2 spot over Coleman Baker to keep Covenant in the match. The win was No. 56 in Cox's singles career.

Logan Hull collected a point for the Scots at No. 3 with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Rose at the No. 3 flight. Methodist was able to hang on for the victory by taking singles wins at each of the final three spots. Wynn Johnson outlasted Paxton Haggerty 6-4, 7-5 at the fifth spot.

TVA Land Grab

The Georgetown land grab is just ‘Business as Usual’ for TVA. For the past 80 years they’ve shown their stripes in this matter - 170,000 acres seized at LBL, countless acreage taken in the Tennessee River Valley. Land taken for coal and nuclear sites. All by the same play book. All from average people. We want this, you have this, we get this. I worked with TVA as a ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: The Greatest 4 Minutes

I would venture to say I know more sports trivia than the next guy. I’ve spent a fun lifetime watching and listening and learning so why is it, on the early eve of my three-score-and-ten, I never knew about “the best four minutes in sports” until just now? Oh, for decades I’ve know the annual Army-Navy football game, the latest just played this weekend, was special. A half-century ... (click for more)
