The City Council is expected to take up an ordinance soon dealing with scooters on downtown streets.
The council had discussed the topic last September, including talk of problems other cities have encountered with the transportation mode.
Councilman Erskine Oglesby said Tuesday it was time for the council to draft some type of ordinance "to get ahead of the game as much as we can."
Officials noted that a couple of scooter companies have taken out local business licenses and some scooters are showing up on the streets.
Councilman Oglesby said the city attorney's office and the city Transportation Department have been working on a plan.
Keith Reisman, assistant city attorney, said one premise of the ordinance will be that scooters would not be allowed on city sidewalks. He said they could go where bicycles go, but he said state law prevents bicycles on sidewalks.
Ken Smith, City Council chairman, questioned whether there is a state ban on bikes on sidewalks. He said he does not think so.
Bicycles - and scooters - would be allowed on multi-modals paths that have areas for both walkers and bikers, it was stated.
