Topic Of Additional Dwelling Units Not Stirring Up Much Public Interest

  • Tuesday, January 15, 2019

Officials said the idea of the City Council passing an ordinance to allow property owners to build an additional dwelling unit (ADU) near their main residence is not stirring much public interest.

Yet, Councilman Darrin Ledford said, "These could have a pretty big impact to communities and neighborhoods."

Planning staff members said details of the ADU proposal were sent to all 95 city neighborhood association presidents.

Of questionnaires sent out, only 170 were returned.

Councilman Ledford said ADUs are popular in many other areas.

He said, "They're very popular. It's a way to deal with housing shortages and to help keep families together. I think it's a great idea."

The planning staff will discuss the matter further with council members at a strategic planning meeting on Feb. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall.
