Frederick R. Brown, Jr., 64, a resident of Old Fort, originally from Jasper, Al., passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, due to complications after cancer surgery. He served in the U.S. Army, was affiliated with Post 81 of the VFW and Amvets. He later worked for CSX Transportation for 38 years, where he retired as an engineer.
Fred loved Nascar and even raced himself at Woodstock, Ga. He loved working on antique trucks, going to car shows and listening to old country and Southern gospel music.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Freda Gayle Brown; mother, Ellra Bell Kimbrough; father, Frederick R. Brown, Sr.; brother, Marshal Brown; sister, Darlene Brown Harrison; and stepfather, William Kimbrough.
He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Gaytha Brown; son, Nicholas Brown; daughter, Sarah Ruth Brown; brothers and sisters, Burnett Brown (Reba), Estillee Fowler, Tina Crutcher (Roger), Norwood Brown (Sandy), Norma Cranford (Clarence), Billy D. Brown and William Lee Kimbrough (Monica). Several nieces, nephews and extended family members also survive.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 at Higgins Funeral Home in Benton and from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Collins Burke Funeral Home in Jasper, Al.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 in the chapel of Collins Burke Funeral Home, with Reverend Paul Busby officiating.
Interment will follow in Gray Cemetery at Parrish, Al. with last words spoken by Joseph Herron.
Serving as pallbearers will be Norwood Brown, John Brown, Billy D. Brown, Roger Crutcher, Taylor Crick and Aaron Pierre.
