Child Who Was Struck And Killed Was Running To Catch Up With His Father; Driver Got Out And Looked At Child, Then Left

Chattanooga Police said a two-year-old child who was struck and killed in the parking lot of the Kankus Market on Wilcox Boulevard on Monday morning was running to catch up with his father.

Police also said that video showed the driver of the vehicle that struck the child, Anwoiane Calloway, get out of his vehicle and look at the child, then take off.

The video showed Calloway get back in the vehicle and pull forward, striking a garbage can. He backed up again before leaving the lot.

Calloway, 36, is facing multiple charges.

The child was hit between the pumps and the store shortly before 11 a.m.

Police said a Ford Expedition driven by Calloway was leaving a gas pump in the parking lot of Kanku’s Gas Station. The vehicle turned right from the gas pump striking the child, who was running across the parking lot .

Calloway called police from a  nearby location advising he may have hit something in the parking lot of Kanku’s. 

Police responded and interviewed the driver.

He was afterward taken to the Hamilton County Jail.
