Over 23,000 additional pages of historic Chattanooga newspapers have been released online via chattanooganewspapers.org.
In all, over 30,000 pages are searchable. The service isfree.
Local history advocates, led by Sam Hall of Deepzoomchattanooga.com , and David Moon of Picnooga.org spearheaded the efforts and the project has been funded through donations.
A list of the donors is available on the website.Moon and Hall began the project in 2016, sharing a concern that Chattanooga’s papers remain largely inaccessible to a wider audience.
Key to this accomplishment was the contribution of microfilm reels by the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) collection.
Iowa-based Advantage Archives was selected for digitization and online hosting. The company works with libraries, state and local historical societies, newspaper publishers, genealogical societies, museums, schools, colleges, and other institutions to preserve and provide access to their local history.
Mr. Hall noted that “Our priorities are to make this invaluable research tool freely accessible today, and we hope to significantly grow the collection as funding becomes available.”
