Boyd Buchanan defeated Silverdale in a tense 2-1 match on Thursday night to advance to the Division II Class A district final.
The Buccaneers scored the opener eight minutes in. Freshman Layla Smith picked up the ball around midfield, beat the outside back for speed and curled her shot into the far right corner to give the hosts with a 1-0 lead.
Silverdale didn’t create much in the first half, but the chances they did were lethal. The Seahawks got their first chance of the game in the 20’ minute.
Senior Marissa Hamilton’s left footed curler was denied by the cross bar as the Seahawks would have to wait another 15 minutes before they attempted another shot.
Boyd Buchanan nearly doubled their lead in the 24’ minute when freshman Abigail Aman’s rocket from the top of the box went bar-down, but was not ruled a goal. Neither referee was in a good enough position to tell if the ball crossed the line.
Hamilton got Silverdale on the board in the 35’ minute with just its second shot of the game. The Buccaneer’s sophomore keeper Kaitlyn Pope tried to tip Hamilton’s shot over the bar, but did not get enough on it as the ball was tipped up and over herself into the goal. The first half ended 1-1.
The second half was much more open with tons of space all over the field. The Seahawk’s goal keeper put the ball on a silver platter for Boyd Buchanan’s sophomore Ria Cox with a pass right to her in the 65’ minute. Cox took too many touches and shot the ball right at the Seahawk’s keeper.
Three minutes later the Buccaneers were awarded a free kick around midfield. Junior Emma Vinson lofted her downfield cross into the box where the ball bounced around before being slammed in by freshman Siena Jones for the eventual game winner.
Silverdale continued to press and push numbers forward, but could not create any tangible opportunities.
“Whenever we play each other it’s never a blowout on either side, it’s always so tight,” Boyd Buchanan Head Coach Todd Ledbetter said. “I have just been really proud of the heart that they (Lady Bucs) have displayed in so many games this year; it’s pretty impressive.”
Boyd Buchanan will play winner of Notre Dame and St. Andrew’s on Saturday in the district final.
