Mocs Volleyball Battles In 3-2 Loss To UNCG

Chattanooga volleyball captured a first set victory before running into an offensive attack from UNCG down the stretch in a 3-1 loss. ?

CHATTANOOGA --- After claiming the first set in dominant fashion, the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team couldn't keep the momentum rolling, eventually falling 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-17) to UNCG on Friday evening inside Maclellan Gymnasium.
 
Chattanooga falls to 5-13 overall this season and 0-5 in SoCon play following the loss.

UNCG improves to 8-11 and 2-3 in league action after the four-set victory.

Chattanooga and UNCG traded the match's first ten rallies to play to a 5-5 tie before UNCG scored four-straight to take a 9-5 lead. The Mocs responded with seven-straight of its own to pull ahead 12-9. After a 12-12 deadlock score, UTC extended out to a six-point lead at 21-15 after a 9-3 run, eventually capping off the set, 25-18, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The second set saw the visitors take a 6-3 lead before the hosts battled back to tie things 7-7. The Spartans chipped its way to a 14-10 lead on an offensive attack before the Mocs scored 12 of the next 20, tying the set at 22-22. A Sarah Root kill fought off the first of two set points for UNCG, 24-23, but a service error ended the comeback effort, 25-23 and tied the match 1-1.
 
A back-and-forth set in the third saw multiple ties and lead changes within the first couple rallies before UNCG pushed out to a three-point advantage, 11-8. UTC fought back to tie the set, 16-16, before allowing a 6-3 run to fall behind 22-19. The Spartans would clinch a 25-21 set win and 2-1 lead in the match on the help of a UTC attacking error and a pair of kills from their offense.
 
The fourth set saw UNCG jump out to a commanding 11-2 lead, forcing Chattanooga to call for both of its timeouts during the run. The nine-point lead grew to as much as 11, 22-11, before the set came to a close at 25-17 and the match, 3-1.

MATCH NOTABLES
- Chattanooga falls to 5-13 overall and 0-5 in Southern Conference action following Friday's loss… the Mocs have dropped their last eight matches after winning three-straight in the Chattanooga Classic.
- Megan Kaufman led the team with 23 digs… first 20+ dig performance of the 2019 season… 20th 20+ dig match of career.
- Brianna Anderson followed Kaufman with 15 digs… second-highest dig total of her career… highest since Oct. 21, 2016 when posting 20 in win over The Citadel.
- Gylian Finch notched her fifth kill-dig double-double of the season… 10 kills and 10 digs on Friday night… added an ace and a block.
