Chanticleer
The a cappella group Chanticleer, a Lee favorite, will return to campus for the second concert of this season’s Presidential Concert Series on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall.
Review for Chanticleer:
Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by the New Yorker, this San Francisco-based Grammy award-winning ensemble recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Chanticleer is known around the world for its seamless blend of 12 male voices ranging from soprano to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz and popular genres, as well as contemporary composition.
“Only a few times have we had a musical guest so popular with our crowd as Chanticleer,” said Lee president Dr. Paul Conn. “For anyone who enjoys choir music, this night will be a wonderful treat. These men perform all types of music, and the crowd just loved them when they were here in 2016.”
Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis A. Botto, who sang in the ensemble until 1989 and served as artistic director until his death in 1997. Chanticleer became known first for its interpretations of Renaissance music and was later a pioneer in the revival of the South American baroque, recording several award-winning titles in that repertoire.
Since the group began releasing recordings in 1981, it has sold well over a million albums. In addition to performing, the members conduct workshops and masterclasses for university students nationwide as they tour.
Tickets for the concert are $15 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and are available for purchase beginning Oct. 21 at the Lee University Box Office in the Dixon Center or by contacting 614-8343 between 3-6 p.m. Tickets are also available at https://www.showclix.com/event/presidential-concert-series-chanticleer/pre-sale.
