Maryville Women Rally In Second Half to Beat Covenant 4-1

  • Thursday, October 17, 2019
The Covenant women's soccer team took a first half lead, but visiting Maryville scored four goals in the second half to break away for a 4-1 victory over the Lady Scots in USA South action at Scotland Yard on Wednesday night.

The loss is the first for Covenant (6-5-2, 3-1-1 USA South) in conference play this season, while Maryville (10-4, 6-0 USA South) remains perfect in league play.

Covenant got on the board in the 21st minute thanks to a deep strike from Kailey Burrell. Kyra Duble played a short pass to Burrell, who blasted her shot from 30 yards out and hit the left post before bouncing into the back of the net for the goal.

The score was Burrell's team-leading eighth of the year, while Duble collected her third assist.

The Lady Scots challenged Maryville throughout the rest of the half, limiting one of the top offenses in the USA South to just six shot attempts in the period.
Burrell's score also snapped Maryville's five-match shutout streak as the visitors had not allowed a goal since Sept. 21.

In the second half, Maryville had an answer. Shannon Reagan cleaned up a loose ball at the goal line in the 49th minute to knot the score at 1-1. The goal was Reagan's 15th of the year and Taylor Frizen recorded the assist. Maryville took the lead for good in the 71st minute when Frizen received a through ball from Macy Lindsey and dribbled into space before scoring her ninth goal of the year.

The visiting Scots tacked on two more goals in the 73rd and 77th minutes. Zoe Van Hook scored in the 73rd minute on a Reagan cross before Frizen capped the scoring with her 10th goal of the season in the 77th minute.

Lucy Sandhoff made five saves at the net for Covenant, while Maryville keeper Abbey Coleman made two. Maryville held a 14-7 edge in total shots as Burrell led Covenant with two.
