Berry Scores Twice In Covenant 5-0 Soccer Win

  • Friday, October 18, 2019
Austin Berry notched his second career two-goal match and the Covenant men's soccer team coasted to a 5-0 victory at LaGrange on Friday evening in USA South play.

The win keeps Covenant (12-2-1, 9-0 USA South) in first place in the USA South West Division. It also marks just the second time in program history that Covenant has been 9-0 in conference play, matching the 2002 squad that finished the year 9-0 in league action. The win was also Covenant's 14th straight USA South regular season victory.

Berry not only collected his second career two-goal match, but he also achieved the feat against LaGrange for a second time.
The sophomore scored the eventual game-winner in the sixth minute as he headed in a corner kick from Jesse Riggs, and then added a goal in the 61st minute when he played a cross from Josh Brower into the back of the net.

The goals were the fifth and sixth of the year for Berry. He also scored two goals in Covenant's 3-0 win over LaGrange in 2018.

After Berry's score early on, Covenant added another later in the first half. Jake Major broke free and scored past LaGrange keeper Lucas Wright to make it 2-0 in the 17th minute of play. The goal was Major's sixth of the season.

In the second half, Major and Brower combined to give Parker Owen an opportunity and Owen capitalized for his second goal of the season giving the Scots a 3-0 edge in the 56th minute. Robert Pettit capped the scoring in the 87th minute with his first career goal as he cleaned up a loose ball inside the six-yard box.

Brower's two assists on the night give him 10 on the year and mark the third time this season he has produced two-plus assists in a match.

Covenant maintained control of the match throughout as the Scots held a 26-9 edge in total shots and 12-5 in shots on target. Paul Lemay registered the shutout as he secured five saves in the win.

Wright made seven saves for LaGrange (5-9-1, 4-6-1 USA South).

It was the seventh shutout in USA South play for Covenant, and the eighth overall on the year. Covenant has outscored its conference opponents 33-2 through the first nine USA South matches of the season.

Covenant heads to Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday to take on Huntingdon. Match time is set for 4 p.m. CDT (5 p.m. EDT).
