With chilly temperatures and a steady rain falling throughout the match, it certainly wasn't the prettiest of days but the Covenant women's soccer team persevered through the conditions and picked up a USA South win with a 1-0 victory over Agnes Scott on Saturday afternoon.
The match's start time was moved up by 30 minutes to try and combat the weather conditions, but rain fell throughout the contest. Covenant (7-5-2, 4-1-1 USA South) notched three points in USA South play with the win.
Covenant had many opportunities during the contest, but only needed one to count and that came off the foot of Kyra Duble in the 13th minute.
Following a cross into the box from Addy Cronan, Duble touched around a defender and scored from the middle of the box to give the Lady Scots a 1-0 lead.
The score was Duble's eighth of the year and her second eventual game-winner. Cronan registered her fifth assist of the season.
From that point on, it was a standout defensive effort from Covenant. The Lady Scots recorded their sixth shutout of the year as they held Agnes Scott to just eight shots in the match. Lucy Sandhoff made three saves at the net for Covenant to collect the win.
Covenant held a 25-8 advantage in shots as Lizzy Hightower had a match-high six attempts, including one that needed an outstanding save from Agnes Scott keeper Victoria Cruz to keep it out of the goal. Duble had four attempts and Anna Robertson and Paige Simons had three apiece.
The Lady Scots controlled possession for the majority of the match. Covenant also had a 10-2 edge in corner kicks on the day.
Cruz made eight saves for Agnes Scott (4-9, 2-4 USA South). Myah Johnson led the visiting Scotties with four shots.
Covenant will travel to Demorest, Ga., on Wednesday to take on Piedmont in a USA South contest. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
