Marie Mott, a citizen activist, said in an emotional Facebook Live post on Wednesday that the victim was her friend, Clay Mason.
She said it was possible he got caught in a crossfire.
Ms. Mott said she and Mr. Mason had been working together for four months on a joint campaign for the City Council. She said he was going to run for District 7 and she for District 8.
She said Mr. Mason "did everything right. He went to Morehouse and graduated with honors. He was working two jobs at two schools."
She said, "You snuffed out one of the brightest lights in this city."
Mr. Mason was an evening library supervisor at Baylor School, officials there said.
