The Chattanooga State Theatre and Music Departments present The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operetta, with the “strikingly tuneful and catchy” music of I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General, Poor Wand’ring One and I Am a Pirate King. It will be presented Nov. 15-17.
Review for The Pirates of Penzance:
In 1879, several weeks before the musical opened in New York, Sullivan wrote a letter to his mother about the new opera. "I think it will be a great success, for it is exquisitely funny." True even 140 years later.
The production is directed by Sherry Landrum with musical direction by John Thomas McCecil. Choreography is by Lindsay Fussell. Costumes are by Brenda Schwab. Set design is by Sarah Miecielica. Maggie Williams is the stage manager.
The cast features Terrance Wright as the Pirate King, Jordan Pope as Frederic, Sarah Grayce Crouch as Mabel, Ryan Laskowski as the Major General, and Josh Alonso, Evan Coulter, Kat Fincher, Chase Garrels, Destin Henry, Lauryn Lawson, Faith Livingston, MaryBeth Mangrum, Cole McClain, Maddie Meier, Richard Nichols, Makayla Pippin, Lydia Reed, Bria Rennick, Art Sanner, Tessa Sentell, Sydney Smith, and Miles White.
Performances will be Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2:30 p.m. It will be held at the Chattanooga State Humanities Auditorium, 4501 Amnicola Hwy.
Tickets are $15 and $10 for seniors, children and students. Advanced tickets can be purchased at www.chattanoogastate.edu/theatre, or purchase tickets at the door.
