Lee's McWhorter, Green Named Players Of The Week

  • Tuesday, October 22, 2019
Lee men's soccer junior Jared McWhorter scored three goals last week, including two in a 4-1 win at Christian Brothers, to earn Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honors the league office announced on Tuesday.

McWhorter, a preseason All-GSC selection, leads the team with seven goals. The forward scored a goal and added an assist in a 3-2 loss at Union on Friday. McWhorter came back with two second half goals to help the Flames roll to a 4-1 win at Christian Brothers on Sunday afternoon.

"Jared has played very well for us this year and in big moments has both created chances for others and been clinical in his own finishing," said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. "These sorts of awards are team awards because when the team plays well, the individual players get recognized; and so I'm thankful for the team result on Sunday but his well deserved for Jared after his weekend performance for us."

McWhorter, a native of Woodstock, Ga., and the Flames sit at 7-4-2 overall and are 3-3-1 in the GSC. The Flames will wrap up a four-match road trip this weekend when they travel to Montevallo on Friday (8:30 p.m.) and Auburn-Montgomery (4:30 p.m.) on Sunday.

Lee women's soccer senior goalkeeper Taylor Green was named the Gulf South Conference Defender of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday.

Green posted back to back shutouts last week as the No. 15 Lady Flames defeated Union, 1-0 and Christian Brothers, 2-0. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native had three saves in the two matches while facing eight shots.

Green and the Lee defense have registered three straight shutouts and have seven total on the year. Green carries a 0.63 goals against average and a .774 save percentage over 1000:31 minutes in net this season.

"Taylor has worked hard all season so it's nice to see her get this award," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey.

Green and the Lady Flames will look to keep the smothering defense going on the road this weekend as they travel to Montevallo on Friday and Auburn Montgomery on Sunday.
