A five-member citizen review committee has been named for a TIF (Tax Increment Financing) request at the Harriet Tubman site in East Chattanooga.
In a TIF, taxes derived from the district are used to pay for district improvements.
Members of the committee are Randy Jacks, JaMichael Jordan, Gary Hathaway, James Brown, II, and Charles Wood, of the Chamber of Commerce.
Rev. Jacks and Mr. Jordan were selections of Councilman Anthony Byrd. He said both are "pillars of the community" and that community members favored their selection.
Councilwoman Carol Berz recommended Deborah Flagg, a financial consultant who is president of the Coalition of 100 Black Women. However, there were three votes in favor and five against by the City Council.
This committee will not be permanent, but focus only on the Tubman project where Nippon Paint plans to build a $60 million facility at the site of a former housing project on Roanoke Avenue.
