MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- For a second straight year the Covenant women's soccer team battled back from a one-goal deficit against Huntingdon. Kailey Burrell's goal in the 87th minute forced overtime and the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw on Friday evening in Montgomery.
Covenant goes to 3-4-2 overall on the year and 1-0-1 in league play. Huntingdon is now 2-6-2 for the season and also 1-0-1 in the USA South play.
In last season's meeting on Lookout Mountain, Huntingdon struck first early in the first half and held a one-goal lead until Covenant rallied with a goal late in the second half before the Lady Scots won in overtime.
Friday's match followed a similar script.
Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Faithe Korponay found the back of the net, assisted by Doren Staley.
Korponay's goal was one of just four shots taken by the host Hawks in the opening half as the teams worked through a defensive bout.
Covenant found better opportunities in the second half and finally came through in the 87th minute. Burrell found space at the top of the box and got her shot past Huntingdon keeper Kylie Kersh for the score to knot the match at 1-1. The goal was Burrell's fourth of the year and the second straight match the sophomore has scored.
Neither team had a good look through the first overtime session. In the second overtime, both keepers were tested but preserved the tie. Lucy Sandhoff saved Alexis Louk's attempt in the 101st minute, but Kersh came through with a save of her own in the 102nd minute off Paige Simons' shot. Anna Robertson had two shots go wide of the target later in the final overtime period.
Sandhoff made six saves for the Lady Scots, while Kersh finished with four saves.
Huntingdon held a slim, 12-11, edge in total shots while Covenant had an 11-7 advantage in corner kicks. Robertson, Burrell, and Kyra Duble had two shots apiece for Covenant.
Covenant travels to face LaGrange in a USA South contest on Saturday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
