Lee University and Bank of Cleveland will present the 30th annual “A Classic Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. in the Conn Center.

“The School of Music is proud to present ‘A Classic Christmas,’ our annual celebration to begin the 2019 Christmas season,” said Dr. Joshua Cheney, assistant professor of choral music.

The concert will feature an array of ensembles, including Lee University Choral Union, directed by Cheney; Lee University Chorale, directed by Dr. William Green; Lee’s Handbell Choir, directed by Laud Vaught; and The Lee University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Robert Bernhardt.

The afternoon performance will include a variety of classic holiday favorites, such as “Jingle Bells,” “The Little Drummer Boy,” and “Silent Night.”  Works by Elaine Hagenberg, Joel Raney, and Mack Wilberg will also be featured.

The Symphony Orchestra will perform Leroy Anderson's “Sleigh Ride” and the beloved “Nutcracker Suite” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Choral Union is a unique blend of Lee University music and non-music majors that is open to all who are interested in choral music and major masterworks for mixed chorus and orchestra.

Chorale is an ensemble of highly motivated vocalists who are selected by audition. An emphasis is placed on the diversity of traditional choral literature. In addition to music majors, membership represents a sampling of many of the majors offered by Lee.

For the past few years, Lee University Handbell Choir has been revived specifically for the Classic Christmas concerts.

Symphony Orchestra performs a wide variety of orchestral literature. The ensemble performs one major concert each semester, and its musicians frequently participate in operatic, choral, and other concerts on campus.

“We hope everyone can join us to celebrate the beginning of this season,” said Dr. Cheney.

Tickets are free, but required due to limited seating. They are available at the Dixon Center box office, which will be open Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m. They can also be reserved by calling 614-8343 or online at https://www.showclix.com/event/classic-christmas-2019
