Businesses in the Chattanooga area are once again partnering with the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer to collect much-needed supplies through ‘Hatch’s Giving Tree.’

Each holiday season, participating businesses receive special ornaments to display on Christmas trees in their locations. Ornaments have information about items the foundation needs, including healthy snacks, gift cards, educational books and toys, cleaning supplies, and more. Customers select an ornament, purchase the item noted, and return it to the business. The Austin Hatcher Foundation then collects the items from each business after the holidays. All supplies support the foundation’s office functions, along with the many services and programs provided at no cost to young cancer patients and their family members.

“This always comes at the perfect time of year,” said Austin Hatcher Foundation Family Services Coordinator Lauren Kelly. “We’re amazed to see the community open their hearts to our mission, while helping us prepare as we enter the upcoming year. So many of our supplies and educational materials are used up throughout the year, and this program is one of the major ways we’re able to replenish those items and continue to offer all services at no cost to families facing the horrible reality of childhood cancer.”

Some local businesses have already begun displaying their respective Hatch’s Giving Tree. All businesses will have trees displayed by Dec. 2. Items are to be returned to the businesses by New Year’s Eve. Participating businesses are the following: B's Sweets, Chattanooga Shoe Company, Colony 13, CycleBar, Delta Zeta at UTC, Five Guys Burgers and Fries (East Tennessee locations), Heaven and Ale Brewing Co. (NorthShore location), K:: A Boutique by Katherine Roberts, Learning Express, Luxe Boutique, MurMaid Mattress (Downtown Chattanooga location), Off the Rack, Plum Nelly, River City Apparel, Shallowford Family Dental Group, Signal Energy, Sophie's Shoppe, Summit Physical Therapy (Downtown Chattanooga location), The Ice Cream Show, and Threads on Signal.

“Special thanks to all participating businesses. They help us collect these items, but they also help spread community awareness about the foundation and the incredible programs and therapies we provide. This support and advocacy for our cause is something that will carry on even after the holiday season ends, and we’re incredibly grateful for that lasting benefit,” Ms. Kelly said.

There's Always Been A Rich Abundance Of Wildlife In St. Elmo

It's really not unusual to see coyotes in St. Elmo. They've been venturing down from the mountains and elsewhere for decades and as far back as I can remember. Right along with raccoons and other critters, large and small. In fact this summer, being a very light sleeper, I was awaken by a sudden noise outside only to look outside and see five very large and healthy raccoons in my ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: A Bless-ed Christmas Gift

It was back in April when I read a wonderful story on one of the websites I scan during My Morning Readings. It had a story that caught my soul. The website is “Little Dumb Man” and, because I am most certainly one of those, it is a continuous joy for me to visit. The story was entitled “15 Signs That Show Someone is a Real, True Friend.” I read it and printed a copy off to save ... (click for more)
