De Asia Russell
A teen has been charged with aggravated robbery after a man was scammed and robbed at gunpoint.
Day’Jour Brown, 18, was arrested earlier.
Police have now arrested his girlfriend, 18-year-old De Asia Russell.
A man said he advertised the selling of a phone on the LetGo app.
The victim met Brown at West 37th Street around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 3.
Police said Brown wore a ski mask and brandished a pistol at the victim. Brown demanded the victim hand over his phone, wallet and cash. Brown briefly removed his mask, and the victim noticed a cross tattoo on Brown’s forehead.
After the victim gave Brown what was demanded of him, Brown allowed the victim to leave the scene in his vehicle. The victim then went to the police when Brown used the stolen phone to send himself $250 on ApplePay.
Because ApplePay uses phone numbers to identify transactions, they were able to discern Brown’s phone number. From there, police were able to match the phone number to Day’Jour Brown. Brown’s Tennessee ID matched the victim’s description of the robber, as the man in the ID also had a cross tattoo on his face.
Brown was found to be included in multiple police reports from within a two-block radius of the incident, and his ID shows his residence to be nearby.
Police said Ms. Russell had advised that the phone used by Brown was hers. She said her boyfriend carried out the robbery and she received the ApplePay money. She agreed to get the phone from her home and provide it to police.
When asked if she was the female voice on the phone, she said she "had a friend do that."
