Longtime Chattanooga Lawyer And Purple Heart Recipient

Joseph Fountain Timberlake, Jr., 93, of Signal Mountain died on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Joe graduated from Chattanooga (City) High School.

He served three years in the United States Marine Corps and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in action at Okinawa in 1945.  He was honorably discharged March 2, 1946.

Joe then attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville Law School on the GI bill.  He received his law degree in August 1951, finishing first in his class.  He enjoyed a successful general civil law practice in Chattanooga for 68 years including being admitted and qualified as an Attorney and Counselor of the United States Supreme Court in 1967.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Watson Timberlake, Sr and sister, Mary Evelyn Orr.

He is survived by his son, Joseph Fountain Timberlake, III; daughter, Suzanna Timberlake Baker; grandsons, Joseph Fountain Timberlake, IV and Theodore Francis Baker, III; and granddaughter, Bonny Suzanna Baker.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 E. Brainerd Road.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
