The No. 5 Lee University women’s basketball team held off Lander University 75-61 for a non-conference win Wednesday evening at Paul Dana Walker Arena. The Lady Flames improved to 10-0 and tied the program record for most consecutive wins to begin a season that was set during the 1998-99 season.

“It was a good win,” said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. “Lander was in the Sweet 16 last year. They’re extremely well-coached and play so hard. They’re a little unorthodox and press for 40 minutes.
We handled the pressure and did some good things. Obviously, we’re excited about the win and some toughness that our team showed down the stretch.”

Lee held a 17-15 advantage following the opening 10 minutes and extended its lead to 37-31 at the halftime break. Following an even third period, the Lady Flames outscored Lander (4-3) by eight (19-11) in the fourth period to supply the final 14-point margin.

The Lady Flames were led by Maddie Long’s 17 points. Long made 3-of-8 shots from behind the arc and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Nicky Widenski made 5-of-6 shots on her way to 12 points. Taylor Boggess and Haley Schubert gave Lee four players in doube-digit scoring with 11 points each.

Tabitha Dailey deposited 16 points to lead four Lander (4-3) players into double-digit scoring. Jessica Harris added 14, Zamiya Passmore had 13 and Sarah Crews tallied 10 points.

Lee won the battle of the boards with 37 rebounds to Lander’s 30. Halle Hughes led the Lady Flames with six rebounds. Abby Bertram, Schubert and Widenski added five a piece. Harris was the top Bearcat rebounder with six.

The Lady Flames were credited with 18 assists. Widenski recorded a game-high four assists with Bertram and Schubert dishing out three assists each. Crews and Harris evenly split six of Lander’s 13 assists.

Lander turned the ball over 24 times, including seven steals by the Lady Flames to lead to 27 points off turnovers for Lee. The Lady Flames were guilty of 26 floor mistakes that led to 18 points for the visitors.

Lee was 25-for-56 (.446) from the field and made 7-of-22 (.318) from distance. Lander hit 21-of-56 (.375) from the floor and connected on 4-of-20 (.200) 3-point attempts. The Lady Flames were 18-for-21 (.857) from the charity stripe, while Lander was 15-for-25 (.600).

The Lady Flames return to Gulf South Conference on Sunday, December 15, against West Florida in Pensacola, Florida. The contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
