Richard "Dick" Calvin Fowler, Jr., 79, of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the morning of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

Born May 18, 1940, in Chattanooga, Dick was raised on Lookout Mountain, attending Bright and McCallie Schools, and was a graduate of Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire.

Dick attended the University of Georgia where he met his wife Sarah. While attending the University of Georgia, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

He returned to Chattanooga in 1963 to work in the family furniture business, which dates back to 1885 with showrooms in Chattanooga since 1910. For the next four decades, he was a leader in the furniture industry, winning multiple awards and was admired as a man of innovation and integrity. He served as president of Fowler Brothers for over 35 years and was respected by the Chattanooga business community. He was a fourth generation member of the Rotary Club.  Fowler Brothers Co. continues today under the leadership of his son, Walton Carter Fowler.

Dick’s aim in life was to glorify Christ in all that he did. He was a longtime member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Deacon.

He had a servant’s heart and was marked by blessing others in profound and life-changing ways.  Throughout his illness he continued to share the gift of Jesus Christ with everyone he met along his journey in “Cancerland.”

He loved to laugh and make others laugh and the mischievous boyhood twinkle in his eyes never left him.

His greatest delight was his family who will forever love and remember him for the wonderful and devoted husband, father, and grandfather that he was.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Calvin Fowler, Sr. and Mamie Howell Fowler.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sarah Carter Fowler; three children, Sarah Chappell Fowler, Chattanooga;  Richard Calvin (Char-La) Fowler III, Savannah, GA, and Walton Carter (Kami) Fowler, Signal Mountain, TN; seven grandchildren, Richard, Chandler, Collins, Henry, and Hudson Fowler, all of Savannah, GA; Laney and Dawson Fowler, Signal Mtn., TN; two sisters, Mamie Dye, Augusta, GA, and Margaret Knowlton, Charleston, SC; brother, Frank (Gay) Fowler, Lookout Mountain, TN; numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, at noon at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church with Reverend Joe Novenson, Reverend Calvin Fowler, and Reverend Brian Salter officiating.

A reception and visitation will be held Monday from 10:30 a.m. until noon at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, 316 N. Bragg Ave., Lookout Mountain, TN 37350. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Deacon Mercy Fund at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
