Lee University’s Faculty Brass Quintet will perform on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee Chapel.
The quintet features Christina Erickson, trumpet; Gordon James, horn; Donald Strand, tuba; Joel Tillman, trumpet; and Dr. Doug Warner, trombone.
The performance will include “Away in a Manger” by Richard Price, “Sing We Now” by Bernard Walker, “Ding Dong Merrily on High” by Richard Price, and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks” by Craig Phillips, among others.
Ms. Erickson, a Lee trumpet instructor, is a teacher and former trumpet builder in East Tennessee. She has served on the faculty of the Cadek Conservatory of Music and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Presently, she serves as co-founder and vice president of the Smokey Mountain Trumpet Guild. She also continues to maintain an active private studio with young and adult students. In addition to Lee, Ms. Erikson currently serves on the faculties of Cleveland State, Chattanooga State Community College, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
Mr. James, horn instructor at Lee, is the principal horn of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. He has attended Roundtop Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival, as well as performed with the Alabama, Baltimore, Dallas, and the Fort Worth symphonies. Mr. James also teaches at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in addition to Southern Adventist University, and Covenant College.
Mr. Strand, tuba instructor at Lee, has performed with a multitude of orchestras, chamber ensembles, Broadway shows, recording groups, and headliners like James Brown, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, and Hans Zimmer. He currently holds principal tuba positions with the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Opera, Columbus (Georgia) Symphony, Greenville (South Carolina) Symphony, and Georgia Symphony Orchestra. A versatile multi-instrumentalist, Strand also regularly performs on bass trombone, contrabass trombone, and cimbasso.
Mr. Tillman, guest artist from Knoxville, is a freelance musician that has performed with the Chattanooga, Knoxville, and the Oak Ridge symphonies as well as the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. He was also utility trumpet with the touring Broadway ensemble performing “Mary Poppins” and the “Sound of Music” at the Tennessee Theatre. He currently serves as the director of bands at Cherokee Middle School in Roane County, Tennessee.
Dr. Warner currently serves as director of applied study and professor of music at Lee. He has also been principal trombonist of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera since 1985. He is in demand as a freelance performer and teacher in the greater Chattanooga area. Dr. Warner’s primary instructors include Tony Chipurn, Allen Ladner, Harry Maddox James Ryon, and David Vining.
