Lady Flames Remain Unbeaten With Win Over Young Harris

  • Sunday, December 8, 2019
Senior Lindsey Roddy led the way with 23 points, making 9-of-16 shots from the field and converted a pair of 3-pointers as Lee turned back the physical Young Harris College team 67-51 on Saturday afternoon inside Walker Arena. The unbeaten Lady Flames improved to 9-0 overall while Young Harris slipped to 5-2.

Senior Abby Bertram totaled 17 points and made 7-of-14 field goal attempts. “Roddy was outstanding and stepped up when we needed her this afternoon while Bertram was, well, just her usual self,” said Lee head coach Marty Rowe.
“Young Harris is a much improved team and played us hard the entire game.”

The Lady Flames quickly moved out to a 24-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, both teams hit a cold spell in the second 10 minutes and Lee was able to put just 11 points on the board but held the Mountain Lions to only six, leading 35-23 at halftime.

The low scoring continued during the final two quarters with Lee putting up 15 points in the third frame and 17 in the fourth. However, the Lady Flames’ solid defense held the visitors to only 28 points the entire final 20 minutes.

Taylor Boggess and Halle Hughes dished off four assists apiece. Lee had 14 total assists for the game and the Mountain Lions only eight. Another important stat saw Young Harris commit 27 floor mistakes to only eight for the Lady Flames. Lee turned the floor mistakes into 32 big points and outscored Young Harris 38-20 in points in the paint. The Lady Flames also had 18 steals, led by Bertram, to just three for the Mountain Lions.

While Roddy and Bertram carried the majority of the scoring, senior Becca Cheeks made her presence felt with 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Senior Nicky Widenski grabbed five boards but Lee lost the rugged rebounding battle 42-33. “Losing the rebound battle hasn’t happened to this group very often but give Young Harris credit,” explained Coach Rowe.

Carly Winters nailed four triples and finished the game with 12 points while Sarah Woghiren countered with 11 and had six rebounds. Niaya White led the Mountain Lions in rebounding with eight.

The Lady Flames expect to face a tougher time when they host Lander University (Greenwood, SC) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Lee returns to GSC play on Sunday, Dec. 15 when they travel to Pensacola to face University of West Florida.
