UTC Women Drop Road Game At Wofford 64-60

  • Saturday, February 16, 2019
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team fell 64-60 at Wofford Saturday in Southern Conference action at the Richardson Indoor Stadium.

The loss snapped a 43-game win streak by the Mocs and was Wofford’s first-ever win against Chattanooga in the regular season. UTC fall to 11-14 overall and 6-4 in league play while the Terriers improve to 14-12 on the year and 6-5 against the SoCon.

Lakelyn Bouldin led all scorers with 21 points and became the 29th member of the Chattanooga 1,000-Point Club.
She has 1,019 and ranks 26th all-time.

“She spent some extra time today in warmups just getting off threes at game speed. That showed,” Chattanooga head coach Katie Burrows said. “She was 3-of-8 for us. Not ideal, but she hit some big ones for us.”

Bouldin was 9-of-16 on the day and added three rebounds. Brooke Burns added nine points and five rebounds and Bria Dial had seven points and a career-best 10 rebounds.

Arianne Whitaker had five blocked shots in the game and moved to a tie with Keiana Gilbert (2015-18) for fourth on the Mocs’ all-time list with 88 in less than two years with UTC.

Chattanooga led 18-16 after the first quarter and pushed it lead to its largest, 23-16 on a 3-pointer by Eboni Williams with 8:13 to play in the second. Wofford outscored UTC 15-5 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 31-28 lead at intermission.

The Terriers opened the second half with the first five points of the third quarter, but the Mocs responded, outscoring Wofford 12-4 over the next 3:57 to tie it up 40-40 at the 3:04 mark of the frame. The teams played even the rest of the period and went into the final quarter tied 46-46.

Wofford started the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run to pull away from the Mocs 58-46 with 5:56 to play in the game. Bria Dial had a putback to snap the run and sparked a 12-2 run by Chattanooga. It was capped off by a 3-pointer by Bouldin with 1:19 to play to make it 60-58 in favor of Wofford.

A jumper by Wofford pushed it to 63-58 and a miss by the Mocs gave the ball back to the Terriers and forced Chattanooga to foul. Cairo Booker made the second of her two free throws and the Mocs called timeout to advance the ball. A slip by Burns led to an open layup making it a three-point game, 63-60.

The game ended with Chloe Wanink making just one of her two free throws for the 64-60 win.

Wanink had a team-high 20 points making 8-of-15 and was 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. Also in double figures for the Terriers was Jamari McDavid with 12 points and Niyah Lutz added 11. Da’Ja Green had a game-best seven assists and Marissa Bayer led Wofford with seven rebounds. Booker had nine points and three steals.

Chattanooga will close out the home slate next week against Samford on a “Black-Out” Thursday and then honor its seniors after its home finale against Mercer on Saturday. Tickets are on sale now at the McKenzie Arena box office or online at GoMocs.com.
