Chattanooga Area Could Get Up To 7 Inches Of Rain In New Wave Of Downpours

  • Monday, February 18, 2019

The Chattanooga area could get up to seven inches of rain in a new wave of downpours Tuesday through Sunday.

Some streams are already swollen and under minor flood advisories, including Lookout Creek and Chickamauga Creek.

The National Weather Service said, "A prolonged period of heavy rain is expected from Tuesday through Saturday. The heaviest rainfall will likely fall across the Plateau, central and southern sections of East Tennessee, and Southwest North Carolina where 5 to 7 inches are possible.

"Since the ground is already saturated and streams are high, any additional heavy rainfall will likely cause flash flooding. Significant stream flooding, flooding of roadways, additional ponding of low lying areas, and mud slides are possible.

River flooding is also a concern for mid to late week. There is a possibility of Flood Watches being issued for at least some parts of the area by mid-week. Continue to monitor future forecasts for the latest information.

Amy Maxwell of Hamilton County Emergency Preparedness, said, "The Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management (HCOEM) will meet with local emergency officials and agencies to discuss preparedness and planning for the heavy rainfall to hit Hamilton County this week.

"For several days, HCOEM has been receiving weather updates from the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tennessee regarding the expected heavy rainfall to arrive tomorrow and last thru Saturday.

"The probability of flash flooding is high. Four to six inches of rainfall is expected in the Hamilton County/Chattanooga area for several days.

"HCOEM officials will be getting updates from Tennessee Valley Authority officials regarding creek and river levels throughout the week."
