Covenant's Young And Crumly Earn Top USA South Honors

  • Wednesday, February 20, 2019
Covenant men's basketball head coach Neal Young was named USA South Coach of the Year and sophomore forward Will Crumly took Player of the Year honors, as the conference released its season awards on Wednesday.

In addition, senior Bailey Spragg joined Crumly on the All-USA South first team, while junior William Bryan was Covenant's representative on the All-Sportsmanship team.

All awards are voted on by the men's basketball coach at each institution.

It is the first time in the NCAA-era of the men's basketball program that the Scots have earned top honors in a conference.
It also marks the first time since 2000 that Covenant has placed two players on a first team all-conference.

In his second season, Young led the Scots to the program's first conference regular season title since 1964, and just the second overall, with a 16-2 record. The 16 conference wins set a single-season program record and Covenant is guaranteed to finish with its best overall winning percentage in program history as the Scots currently sit at 18-8. Covenant was picked in the USA South preseason poll to finish third in the West Division, but ran through the league and clinched the top seed with a week left in the regular season. In his two seasons at the helm of the Scots, Young has accumulated a 36-18 overall record and is 26-8 in the USA South.

Crumly, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., is currently second in the conference in both scoring and rebounding as he is averaging 22.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest. He accumulated the most total defensive and total rebounds in the conference during regular season play. The sophomore is also third in the league in field goal percentage at 60.2 percent and his 233 made field ranks fifth in Division III. Crumly has scored in double figures each game this season, and 28 straight contests going back to last year, and has posted 10 double-doubles. For his efforts this year, Crumly earns his first All-USA South honor as a member of the first team as he also was a two-time USA South Player of the Week award recipient (Jan. 7 and Jan. 14).

Spragg, a senior from Windermere, Fla., earns his first All-USA South honor. The senior point guard is averaging 14.0 points, while shooting 52.9 percent from the field, and leads the USA South with 7.0 assists per game. He currently ranks fourth in the nation in assists per game and in total assists with 174. He had a career-high, and a program NCAA-era record, 12 assists against Concordia (Texas) on Jan. 1. Spragg eclipsed 1,000 career points during the season, becoming the 28th member of the club in Covenant program history. He has tallied four double-doubles this season, three of which have been of the points-assists variety.

Bryan, a junior from Lithonia, Ga., has been a key member for the Scots and collects his first All-Sportsmanship nod. He has played in all 26 games this season, making nine starts, while averaging 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Bryan scored a season-high nine points in a Covenant victory over USA South foe Piedmont on Dec. 5.

Covenant (18-8) will host the USA South Tournament semifinals and championship on Friday-Saturday inside Barnes PE Center. The No. 1 West seeded Scots will face No. 2 East seed Methodist at 7 p.m. on Friday.
