Members of Cleveland State Community College’s Omega Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society have a reason to smile after bringing home several awards from the recent Phi Theta Kappa Regional conference. PTK members and advisors from different chapters competed for recognition in the Society’s Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship at the Tennessee Regional Conference held at Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tn. Phi Theta Kappa is in the international honor society of the two-year college and the largest honor society in the world.

While attending the Regional conference, Amanda Forbes was honored and received the following awards:

- Extemporaneous Speech, First Place
- Poetry, Honorable Mention in Tennessee Mosaic Regional Literary Anthology
- Research, Honorable Mention in Tennessee Mosaic Regional Literary Anthology

For its commitment to chapter development, the Omega Omicron Chapter was recognized as being a Five Star Level chapter, the highest development distinction that can be earned.

“I’m thrilled that I won,” said Ms. Forbes. “It’s nice to be recognized for things that you do. The things that they published in the Tennessee Mosaic Regional Literary Anthology meant the most to me because they were from my personal life. When it’s close to the vest, it definitely means more!

“My time with PTK has been a lot of hard work, but ultimately it has been worth it. It has pushed me outside my comfort zone, and I really needed that. I used to hate public speaking and now, it’s part of my character. It’s what I want to do for a living. I really enjoy public engagement. I’m not afraid anymore. I honestly embrace it now. I used to think everyone was better than me, but now I finally feel like an equal, and that’s a good feeling.”
