The county school system is considering using an outside firm to help recruit substitute teachers.
Keith Fogelman, chief talent officer, said the system has 753 subs, but needs 1,200.
He said current recruiting costs are $2,939,908, and Executive Staffing Solutions (ESS) could do the work for $2,299,691.
Mr. Fogelman said ESS is a large firm that would take a regional approach to the recruitment effort.
Board member Steve Highlander said some potential subs serve instead in North Georgia where they pay more. He said a sub can make about $20 more in Dalton than in Hamilton County.
Officials said Hamilton County subs with a high school degree make $8.06 per hour or about $56 per day. Those with a degree make $10 an hour or $70 per day. Those who are certified earn $15.82 per hour.
Board member Rhonda Thurman said she is often told by people who would like to sub is that they offer their services, "but they never get a call back."
She said, "We are hiring from the same group of people. I don't know why our staff should not be able to do the job."
Ms. Thurman asked if ESS is used would the county school recruiting staff be reduced. Mr. Fogelman said they would be assigned to other work.
