Severe Storms In 2 Waves Set To Pass Through Chattanooga Area On Sunday

Severe storms are set to pass through the Chattanooga in two waves on Sunday.

There is the possibility of tornadoes as well as damaging hail.

The National Weather Service warned of "An Enhanced Risk of Severe Thunderstorms for Sunday Afternoon and Early Evening across east Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina...

"A strong storm system will move across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians Sunday, producing two rounds of showers and thunderstorms - one in the morning and one in the late afternoon and evening. There is an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms areawide, mainly with the late day storms. The main concern will be damaging winds, but isolated tornadoes and hail up to half dollar size will also be possible.

"Tightening pressure gradients across the area Sunday will also produce windy conditions. Southerly winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph is possible. Stronger winds are expected over the higher elevations.

"There is still uncertainty on the evolution of this storm system with later updates to the potential of severe storms and timing likely. Please keep abreast of the latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service."

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Southeast wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Sunday

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 4pm. High near 75. Breezy, with a south wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Sunday Night

Showers and thunderstorms before 10pm, then a chance of showers. Low around 43. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Sunny, with a high near 64. Northwest wind around 10 mph.
