Cleveland State Baseball Sweeps Vol State; Softball Splits Doubleheader

Saturday, April 13, 2019 - by Lindsey Beck

Cleveland State Baseball completed a series sweep of Vol State with a 4-0 victory over the Pioneers on Saturday.

Until the fifth inning, the game was tied at 0-0, but the Cougars offense came to life and scored three runs to power them ahead of Vol State. The top of the order was a key to the inning, with CF Tucker Mendenhall (1-for-4), LF Lance Dockery (1-for-4), and SP Jonathan Hickman (1-for-3) each driving in a run. 3B Rhett Baldwin (1-for-5) also hit a home run in the seventh inning to seal the deal.

Hickman carried the Cougars on the mound, pitching an eight-inning shutout paired with seven strikeouts.

“We pitched and played well all weekend,” head coach Mike Policastro said. “Our offense was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in all three games. It was good to see us bounce back and get a sweep after last weekend.”

The Cougars will play at Shorter University JV on Wednesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4:00 ET.

Softball split a doubleheader with Vol State on Saturday, winning 7-1 in the first game and suffering a 8-4 defeat in the second. They fell 3-1 in the series overall.

“We didn’t play our best this weekend,” head coach Katie Willingham said of the series, “Our offense wasn’t able to produce when runners were in scoring position and it hurt us. It’s tough playing on the road, but it’s even tougher when we don’t do our jobs on the road. We will use the next two series to sharpen up and prepare for the [TCCAA] tournament. We have done a better job on defense and [our] pitchers are working hard to keep hitters off balance. We will keep working hard and finish strong.”

The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Friday & Saturday for a weekend series at home with Dyersburg State. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 2:00 ET and Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 12:00 ET with a Sophomore Day celebration in between games.

The town of Walden has a population of 2,118 people. What do those citizens need with a 49,000 square foot grocery store? Or with 10,000 square feet of commercial office space? Or a fuel island? Roy Exum: This Ain’t Gonna’ Work

When Governor Bill Lee talks about education, or the lack of it, I’ll listen. He’s the guy who, when he found his newly-hired employees were wanting, his thriving Lee Company in Nashville started its own vocational school and paid them to learn. The investment was brilliant and the outcome obvious. But now comes the bigger gamble, vouchers for some and, for others, charter schools ... (click for more)
