Shirley Dean Newby, 74, of Decatur, Tennessee, passed away on April 13, 2019.

She was born on March 23, 1945 to the late Charlie and Helen McDowell. Shirley was an active member of Burdette Baptist Church. She loved music, gospel music in particular, especially the Gaither Vocal Band. Shirley also loved going to town to eat out. In addition to these, she loved working crosswords and word searches. Above all, Shirley loved her family and spending time with them. 

In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Newby, Sr.; son, Edgard Newby Jr.; brothers, Arnold McDowell and Leon McDowell. 

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sisters: Ida Goode (Lonnie), Dorothy Stokes, Nancy Rogers (Johnny), Patsy McKinney, and Edith Minnis; brother Charles McDowell (Mildred), grandchildren: Shelby Newby, Logan Newby, and Crystal Krapivner; great grandchild Stella. In addition to these, she leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends. 

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, at Companion Funeral Home at 2419 Georgetown Road NW, Cleveland, Tn. 37311.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at the funeral home with Reverend James Staton officiating. Interment will follow the service at Johnston Cemetery.
