Members of both the men's and women's cross country teams competed together at the Westside Ruritan 5K at Walker Valley High School in Cleveland, Tenn on Saturday.
Cleveland State represented well, as both teams had a member win their gender's race. Derek Gallardo, who competed in the 5000m at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday evening and placed 23rd in a strong field of 33 runners with a time of 15:32.62, won the men's race with a time of 17:30.
Luis De La Pena and David Tullock took second and third with times of 17:56 and 18:03 respectively. Madison Guider finished first on the women's side, while Alexis Kyle placed fifth. Head coach David Kyle, who raced alongside his team, placed ninth overall.
"I feel like we represented Cleveland State well as we had a total of 11 people representing our cross country program, including friends and family members," David Kyle said. "We had more than any other school as there were high school and middle schools represented. It was another fun race and I am proud of my team. We will continue to work hard in the off-season and we will be prepared for another great cross country season."
