Understanding “Trauma Informed” Free Workshop Is Thursday

  • Wednesday, April 3, 2019

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, In the U.S., one in three women and one in six men experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime and professionals who work with clients and the body should have an idea of how trauma impacts the brain and the body.

An Understanding Trauma Informed workshop will be offered Thursday at 2 p.m. at 1800 McCallie Ave. This is one of several free events in conjunction with Partnership for Families, Children, and Adults as part of April’s National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Trauma informed care means treating a whole person, taking into account past trauma and the resulting coping mechanisms when attempting to understand behaviors and treat the patient.  With groundbreaking works such as “The Body Keeps the Score”, in addition to widespread adoption of research on Adverse Childhood Experiences in many governmental agencies, we now have trauma informed care in most hospitals, non-profits, and therapy practices, said officials.

Susan Dendtler, owner of Redbud Mental Wellness, a licensed professional counselor, mental health services provider and licensed yoga instructor will explain the latest research on Trauma Informed.  “I promise there will not be any power points,” said Ms. Dendtler.  “I will guide a collaborative conversation about how to recognize trauma, how to screen and talk to clients about the role of trauma in their lives and their bodies, and how to help create a culture of trauma awareness and support in our workplaces."

This training is specifically for, but not limited to, the following professionals: Yoga, Barre, Pilates, Spin, Martial Arts Teachers, Personal Trainers, Crossfit Trainers, Gym Managers/Owners, Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, Acupuncturist and Physical Therapists.
