The String and Wind Ensembles of the CSO will perform Saturday at the Princess Theatre in South Pittsburg

The String and Wind Ensembles of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera will perform Saturday at 7 p.m. CDT at the Princess Theatre, 215 S. Cedar Ave. South Pittsburg. The musicians are principal members of the orchestra.

The program includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “String Quartet No. 19 in C. Major” composed in 1780s, Max Reger’s 1904 “Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola”, Malcolm Arnold’s 1943 “Three Shanties for Wind Quintet” and Douglas Hedwig’s 2018 “Four Third Streams for Woodwind Quintet”.
The musicians for the evening are Josh Holritz, violin; Sheri Peck, violin; Megan Chisom, viola; Eric Reed, cello; Kristen Holritz, flute; Robert West, clarinet; Robert Burks, oboe; Gordon James, French horn; and Eric Anderson, bassoon.
The Chattanooga Symphony traces its beginning to the first concert on Nov. 5, 1933 when Chattanooga High School graduates and students first pursued their dream of playing classical music together. The May 25 concert will be in the theatre that opened as the Princess Theatre on July 2, 1934 less than a year after the Symphony was founded.
Malcolm Arnold, a trumpeter by training, was a full-time composer whose popular works include the Oscar winning musical score for the 1957 film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. Douglas Hedwig, a graduate of the Julliard School, played trumpet for the New York Metropolitan Operas before becoming a fulltime composer. In 2013 Mr. Hedwig relocated to Chattanooga and served as the 2013-2017 music critic for the Times Free Press. Jan. 27 was the world premiere of his “Four Third Streams” by Chattanooga Symphony Wind Quintet.
