MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Wednesday’s softball action at the StarPlex Field Number Three is one that Chattanooga Christian coach Lisa Gray wishes she could wipe from her memory bank.

Facing King’s Academy for the fifth time this spring in the winner’s bracket final of the Division II-Class A softball tournament, the Lady Chargers had a really bad experience.

The Lady Lions sent 16 hitters to the plate in the first inning and collected a dozen hits while scoring 13 runs.

That was more than enough as they got revenge for a 7-6 loss on Wednesday when the Lady Chargers came back to score two runs in the seventh for the win.

Thursday’s final score was 17-2.

“The good news is that the tournament is not over, but we have to come back tomorrow and prove what we’re capable of doing,” said CCS coach Lisa Gray after this latest defeat.

“We were a little nervous at the start and we got caught somewhat off-guard, but I’m not very pleased because we didn’t win.  I’ve said all along that we have a team full of fighters and I’m confident that we’ll come back tomorrow and play our hearts out,” Gray said after her team fell to 25-11.

Both teams have beaten each other twice, so Friday’s game at 11:30 will be for all the marbles.

The Lady Lions were obviously not pleased after losing to the Lady Chargers on Wednesday.  They appeared to take out their frustration in the first inning when those 12 hits included four doubles, two home runs and six singles.

K.J. Ammons had the most productivity in that opening frame as she ripped a two-run double in her first at-bat before finishing the inning with a three-run homer.

Regan Weekly had a two-run homer and sacrifice fly for three RBIs in that inning while Sarah Webb also had a run-scoring double.

The Lady Chargers avoided being shutout by scoring twice in the second.

Lauren Day led off the inning by getting hit and was on board when Lauren Kay hit a two-run homer to right.

Mary Vandergriff and Savannah Ricketts had back-to-back singles in the fifth, but winning pitcher Kaylan Cole got Madison Hollis on a fly to left and Lauren Day on a grounder to second to end the game.

Hollis had a tough outing as she took the loss after allowing the first nine runs on nine hits.  She had gotten one out before being replaced by Emily Day.

Cole was the winner after going the distance and allowing two runs on five hits.

Ricketts was the only CCS player with two hits.

The Lady Lions improve to 36-6 with Thursday’s win.
