Frank Casteel, who was convicted of the triple Signal Mountain murders, has died in prison. He was 71.
Casteel had continued to deny that he killed Richard Mason, Earl Smock and Kenneth Griffith, who rode ATVs onto his remote property. They were on their way to the Blue Hole swimming spot.
The murders happened in July 1988 and Casteel, who guarded his property zealously, was an immediate suspect.
However, he was not charged for a number of years as the investigation continued by county detectives Larry Sneed and Roy Parham.
He was convicted once, then got a retrial. A second jury also found him guilty.
