Wanda “Marie” Gentry Phillips

Wanda “Marie” Gentry Phillips, October 23, 1925-June 9, 2019.

She loved to sing lullabies to her great-grandbabies, and her three sons were her whole world.  She was proud of her grandchildren and when she’d speak of them, she’d get a little twinkle in her eye. She could cook anything you wanted without a recipe—and her famous fudge was her specialty. Married to a policeman who was killed in the line of duty when they had three boys under the age of seven made her the strongest lady ever.  She was everyone’s “Nanny Ree.” We loved her so much.  Most of us were either named Marie, or named our daughters Marie. She taught us this prayer and we still say it nightly- Our Father, we thank Thee for the night, And for the pleasant morning light, For rest and food and loving care, And all that makes the world so fair. Help us to do the things we should, To be to others kind and good, In our work and in our play, To grow more like Thee every day.

We now have another angel listening above for our sweet prayers.

This Sunday evening June 9, 2019, surrounded by her loved ones, she took her last breath at 93 years old.

She is survived by her sons, Richard D. Phillips (Beth) of Ringgold, Ga. and Thomas L. Phillips of Dalton, Ga.; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; special nieces, Mrs. Bernice Spangler (Steve), Ms. Hollie Cope, Ms. Norma Gentry, Mrs. Samantha Regalado (Shawn), and Ms. Velma Gentry; and special nephew, Mr. Mitchell Cope.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice W. Phillips, Sr.; her son, Maurice W. Phillips, Jr.; and sisters, brothers and parents.

Her family would like to extend sincere thanks to all of the people that were there to support and love Nanny Ree as she prepared to make her final journey to her eternal home. They would also like to thank Ridgewood Manor and Hamilton Health for all of the care and support that has been provided by their staff, especially her nurses.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, June 12, at 4 p.m. in the Ponders Melrose Chapel with Bishop Tony Ingle officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements will be by Ponders Melrose Chapel, 138 Melrose Drive, Dalton, GA.  (706) 226-4002.
